The controversial Mount Pleasant site in south Islington will this month play host to one of a number of protest actions as part of a London-wide Green Party campaign for fairer housing developments, built for Londoners rather than investors.
The campaign – called Crumbs for London – was launched last week by Green Party London Assembly member Darren Johnson, and has three major themes:
– Taxes on wealthy investors: We will campaign for fairer taxes like Land Value Tax to discourage investors from buying new homes, helping to stabilise prices. We should be building homes for Londoners, not assets for investors.
– A fairer deal for tenants: We will push for more secure tenancies and smart controls to stabilise rents.
– Prioritise affordable housing: We will take a tougher stance with developers to make sure they build more affordable housing, and stop demolishing existing homes. We should massively increase investment in new social housing.
Islington Green Party has a long history of campaigning for a fairer deal for tenants, the construction of more social housing and genuinely affordable housing, and discouraging speculation in what should be people’s homes in our Borough.
We are proud to host the first of a number of protest actions across London – the first of which will be at Mount Pleasant, currently subject of a battle over its future as a residential development.
