Islington Residents deserve clear air

Recently, the UK has received a second and final written warning for breaching air quality laws relating to levels of dangerous airborne particles.  Following a Freedom of Information request from the Campaign for Clean Air in London, data has been revealed showing air pollution levels and premature deaths by borough and by ward.  Worryingly, Islington is the 6th worst London borough.

To improve air quality, it is vital that Londoners reduce car use and increase levels of walking and cycling for short journeys and we are encouraging Islington residents to take part in two consultations the Mayor is running.

This Monday, 2nd August, is the deadline for responding to the Mayor’s consultation on the removal of the western extension of the Congestion Charge zone.  If the charge is removed, congestion will rise by up to 21%, harmful emissions will rise by up to 8% and Transport for London will lose £55 million net income, which is needed for other transport projects across London (such as improving the pedestrian and cycle crossings at Madras Place on Holloway Rd).  Islington Green Party are advising members and residents to object to it’s removal.  For more detailed information, the Campaign for Clean Air has more information and to object here http://bit.ly/9QPPbG for more detailed information and then fill in TfL’s consultation

13th August is the deadline for Londoners to respond to the Mayor’s Air Quality Strategy.  This looks at how transport, homes, offices and new developments can contribute to improving air quality.  Good air quality, should be a right, not a privilege, so it is important to tell the Mayor to comply fully with the air quality laws.
