Highbury Greens Charlie Kiss, Ernestas Jegorovas and Caroline Russell went to Whitehall tonight to join the emergency demonstration against the rush to launch a missile strike on Syria.
The Green party is clear and unambiguous on this issue. We believe that it is not our role to get involved in the civil war in Syria or to ‘punish’ a country. Punishment has never worked. If anything it risks inflaming the situation. The UK should not get embroiled in wars that the US chooses to embark on.
Charlie Kiss said “Military strikes are likely to escalate into further military involvement as bitter experience has shown us. Nick Clegg, speaking on Radio 4, could not answer the question, what will ‘our next response be if the strike doesn’t work?’ The British public know better.”
Ernestas Jrgorovas said “Ultimately whilst an attack on civilians and children with chemical substances is horrific and we condemn it unequivocally, we cannot see how this civil war will be hastened to an end by contributing further to the violence.”
Caroline Russell said “The United Kingdom should avoid a knee-jerk reaction, and instead collaborate with the International Community to prioritise political resolution, the supply of humanitarian aid and an embargo on arms supply”.
