Greens renew calls to tame Holloway Rd with a 20mph limit

Following the cancellation of the cycle superhighway route 12 that was to connect Muswell Hill to central London via Holloway Rd, Islington Greens renew their calls for the Mayor to tame the traffic with a 20mph speed limit.

Cllr Caroline Russell, who was part of the consultation on the superhighway in her capacity as chair of Islington Living Streets, said: “I think they realised it would take a lot more than just painting blue lanes on the road – that doesn’t protect cyclists or pedestrians from traffic danger.

“Losing the proposed cycle superhighway is desperately disappointing. The Holloway Road is a huge multi-lane road, it’s the A1 and goes all the way to Scotland but as it runs through Islington, it is a place where many people are working, living and shopping.”

“We need the road to be tamed and it would have been with the cycle superhighway.  It would have reduced road danger, air pollution, noise and it would have helped it to feel more like a place for people than a place for cars.”

Former Councillor Katie Dawson said  “Islington Green Party called for 20mph limits when we secured the speed limit for all Islington controlled roads – we’ve been calling for 20mph on the Mayor’s roads for a very long time.  Slower speeds would help make the borough less traffic dominated, more pleasant  and safer for residents.”
