Holloway Road Closure

Live updates on the closure from TfL can be read on their website

This a guest post from Green Party Cllr Caroline Russell

TfL are removing the 150-year-old bridge on Holloway Road that crosses the train line underneath. It’s a complicated piece of engineering that TfL will be working round the clock on. The work is happening over the festive period to minimise the impact on commuters.

The building work has been long and I’m sure many of us will be relieved to see the end of this project. As a local councillor I have been, at times, very disappointed with how TfL have been managed this project thus far. Highbury & Islington station has become very difficult to access and pedestrians have found the area around the station very difficult to navigate.

I have repeatedly called on TfL to make changes to make the roads more pedestrian and cyclist friendly. That’s included having longer green lights for pedestrians to cross, removing unnecessary street clutter and making sure there is proper lighting at night. Whilst the bridge is removed I will continue to push TfL to consider the impact on pedestrians.

I’ve also made TfL aware of the likely impact on Highbury Park and Blackstock Road. Drivers unable to use Holloway Road may be using this route as an alternative. Since Highbury Barn is a very narrow road, where many people will be shopping over Christmas, TfL must work to ensure this route is not overused.

Buses will also be impacted. The 43, 263, 271, 277, 393 and N41 will all be on diversion because of the closure on Holloway Road.

The London Overground will also be closed from Highbury and Islington station from the 23rd December until the 30th. Both the East London Line between Highbury & Islington and Dalston Junction and the North London Line between Camden Road and Stratford will be impacted.

Full details of impacts and diversions are available on the TfL Website
