Black Lives Matter

Around the world and across the UK there is a wave of resistance and change, and the Green Party stands with Black Lives Matter every step of the way.

In the UK, there still isn’t justice for Stephen Lawrence.  There still isn’t justice for the 72 who died in Grenfell – the majority from BME communities, pushed into unsafe housing in one of the richest boroughs in the country.  We are still deporting people to their deaths, two years after the Windrush scandal.  Meanwhile as the NHS fights to protect us during this tragic pandemic, more than 200 NHS staff have died fighting this disease – two thirds of them from minority communities, in a hospital culture where half of all BME staff report being discriminated against.

Islington is one of the most diverse boroughs in the UK, yet poverty and discrimination still haunt our streets

Islington resident and Green Party London Assembly Candidate Benali Hamdache said:  “Black Lives Matter. And here in Islington there is so much to do.  We know our black community face disproportionate stop and search.  That Sarah Reed died here in Holloway Prison.  The demands for justice and fairness must bring change to Islington.

Islington Greens promise to work with the community and to champion the #BlackLivesMatter campaign.”
