Latest figures show that Islington recycled or composted only 29.6% of its household waste in 2019-20 – fractionally up on the year before but still well below an original target of 37% by 2020.
Central government cuts to local authorities since 2010 have seriously harmed the ability of local councils to function, with Islington having had 70% of it’s funding cut since 2010. However, recycling not only better for our environment – it is one of the best ways to save money, as Islington Council estimates it costs £80 per tonne to send rubbish to landfill, and only £15 per tonne to recycle it. Islington Green Party will continue to challenge the council to make recycling as easy as possible across the borough.
