COUNCIL TO IMPLEMENT 20mph LIMITS ON ALL ITS ROADS – AT LAST!

Islington Green Party welcomes the news that we are to become the first area in the country to introduce a mandatory 20mph speed limit on every road controlled by the local authority.
The policy was originally introduced by Islington’s first Green councillor, Katie Dawson, with considerable cross party support, but was then only applied by the Council to its residential streets.
Since then the Greens have continued to campaign for the limit to be extended to major arteries under the Council’s direct control, such as Blackstock Road and Essex Road. After years of steady decline in road traffic accident numbers in the borough, these have increased alarmingly again in the last few months, and the new limits will be a major step towards safer streets for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
The "game-changing" decision by Councillor Paul Convery, the borough’s Labour transport chief, is to be warmly applauded!
