Paul Elliot

Paul Elliot

Paul has lived in Islington for 33 years.  He has two children, who both attended local state schools.  Now retired, he previously held senior roles in the financial services industry.  Since retiring he has become more focused on our treatment of the environment and is now of the opinion that this is the most important issue confronting us.  He believes that reforming our attitude to the environment starts at the local level.

He believes that if we can develop a closer sense of community through the increased availability of social housing, the elimination of crime and anti-social behaviour, and radical improvements to social services, then we can use this as a base on which to build towards greater sustainability.

We moved to Islington in 2019, now living as three generations in a two-household house on Huddleston Road. I worked in banking until several years ago; but the ‘R’ word (retire) is outside my vocabulary.

I volunteer twice weekly as delivery driver for Food Bank Aid, an ever-busier local charity; I also volunteer weekly as business mentor for Visionnaires, a social enterprise supporting local start-up entrepreneurs.

Since early 2020 I have been part of the intense steering group of NOcado.org. This ongoing, non-political campaign is trying to protect the children, families and staff of Yerbury primary school, and other nearby residents of all ages. NOcado has made me realise how avoidable air pollution caused by a new development can threaten the health and environment crucial for all our generations.

Working on these causes with local activists from diverse backgrounds has also opened my eyes to the many social justice issues that continue to remain all over Islington including Junction Ward. I left the Labour Party when I moved here; after being a centre-left ‘orphan’ I found my political home in the Green Party last year. A different way of doing politics with a relevant agenda for our community.
