The London Green party have been celebrating after retaining a Green MEP for London. The outgoing Jean Lambert, who is standing down as an MEP after 20 years, is to be replaced by fellow Green and Lambeth Councillor Scott Ainslie. The Green campaign championed remaining in the EU and addressing the climate emergency.
This election saw a wave of wins for the Greens across Europe. In the UK, more Green MEPs were elected than ever before. Green Party co-leader and candidate for London Mayor, Siân Berry said: “Support for the Green Party is at an all-time high, and every vote has sent a clear message that people want bold action to keep us in Europe and to stop climate chaos. London has voted for hope not hate, electing the Green Party, with a record of working hard to deal with the causes of Brexit and fix the problems we face right here in the UK.”
Newly elected London Green MEP Scott Ainslie said: “Hundreds of thousands of Londoners backed our campaign. I promise to work tirelessly on fighting for a People’s Vote and getting the European Union to take action on climate change, tax dodging and inequality.”
