Recycling in Highbury Quadrant

On Islington Council’s website there is a section urging people to help deal with the budget cuts.   Recycling features at the bottom: “It costs £80 per tonne to send rubbish to landfill, but only £15 per tonne to recycle it – and of course it’s better for the environment.”

However, as the council dug deeper into austerity politics, recycling services was one of the first hit, despite the higher cost of landfill.  Green Party Councillor, Caroline Russell, as the only opposition councillor, has been working with local residents in Highbury Quadrant to try and make recycling easier, and following a successful trial a scheme is now being rolled out to re-purpose refuse chutes for recycling.  As well as saving the council money, the scheme helps reduce the need for unsightly recycling bins across the estate, and reduces smells from the chutes – all while making it easy to do a simple thing for the environment.
