I’m a journalist and writer with an absolute passion for Islington. I moved to Highbury after leaving university in 1986. Now that my youngest daughter is just finishing university I recently stepped down as a community governor at Highbury Fields School.

There are many things we can improve but whatever your age Islington seems to offer something special – community, shops, jobs, history, the perfect commute & plenty of places to just chill.  When I walk or cycle around the area it is great to see so many people getting pleasure from being outdoors.

We may have the least green space of all Londoners, but on the plus side Islington has a huge number of small spots of green to take a moment in. And here’s a special thank you to all community gardeners!

It’s quite hard to survive financially as a writer, so I also teach occasionally at university (London College of Communication), write about solutions to the climate crisis and run a paddleboarding social enterprise supporting the youth work at Islington Boat Club in Angel.

As a long-time supporter of the Green party I’m hoping that the 2022 council elections will see a good chunk of our borough switch from red to Green.

Jeremy Drew

Jeremy Drew has lived in Highbury for 26 years and before that in central Islington. He and his wife have brought up two children here. He is now semi-retired from work as a transport economist, working both in they UK and internationally.

His most recent assignment was on the decarbonisation of rail transport worldwide and he now spends much of his time as a volunteer advising various organisations on green issues and the Green Party on transport policy.
