It is testament to the hard work of local campaigners that Islington Council's plans for Barnard Park have been scuppered. Questions must be asked as to why the council was so eager to downsize the community pitch.
At full council Cllr Claudia Webbe claimed the council plans for Barnard Park did not result in a reduction in sport facilities. The government's intervention and subsequent withdrawal of the plans show this was never the case.
Barnard Park's pitch
It's time for the council to sit down with everyone who uses Barnard Park and rethink the plans. The council should refurbish the pitch and preserve the size.
Every week hundreds of kids learn their footballing skills and have fun at Barnard Park, why would the council want to change that?
