Cllr Caroline Russell - Highbury East Ward Councillor & London Assembly Member

Caroline has lived in Islington since 1986, initially in Kings Cross and since 1992 in Highbury. She is married with three children. She has a Fine Art MA from Goldsmiths and a B.Eng in Civil Engineering from City University.

Over the years she has worked as an artist, bicycle dispatch rider, community arts leader, university lecturer and, after a period of full time parenting combined with community activism and school governing, as a transport and clean air campaigner.

Caroline RussellCaroline was elected as sole opposition councillor in Islington in 2014. She works closely with residents, hearing their issues and bringing people and campaigners into the Town Hall. Despite being the only Green up against 47 Labour councillors, Caroline has successfully put forward motions, suggestions and campaigns that have influenced council policy. Since being elected she has:

  • Pushed to make the teaching of LGBT History year-round, rather than confined to a solitary month
  • Encouraged the council to spread the use of anonymous CVs by Islington employers, to try and reduce the systemic barriers that put ethnic minorities and women out of work
  • Moved the council and Islington schools to revise their use of the Prevent strategy, encouraging a community-led approach to tackling extremism
  • Worked hard on making streets safer in her ward, getting new zebra crossings installed and resurfacing local paths
  • Successfully fought for full time contracts for council staff languishing on seasonal agency contracts with no sick pay or holiday pay

In 2016, Caroline was elected to the London Assembly where she focusses on Transport, Economy and Environment for the Green Group. She is Chair of the Economy Committee for the year May 2017-18 and Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee.
