Council must do more to increase recycling in Islington

Council executive member for sustainability Rakhia Ismail claimed last month that the council is making it as easy as possible for residents to recycle their waste – but the evidence shows they could be doing much more.

On estates where Islington Green Party members live, in Canonbury, Clerkenwell, and elsewhere, the few recycling bins available are frequently overflowing and positioned away from the rest of the bins.

In addition, there are no signs where the recycling facilities are.

It is therefore no surprise that the rate of recycling has barely budged since mandatory recycling was brought in, having increased by just 1.02 per cent. The council could and should be doing much better!
