Encourage walking and cycling, not parking, say Islington Greens

Islington Green Party has been baffled to see the Council crowing about its great achievement of adding 100 parking spaces in the last six months.

We replied to the council, pointing out that this is not in keeping with its recent claims to finally be taking the issue of air pollution seriously. Needless to say, we didn’t get a reply.

The last thing Islington needs is more car journeys.

There is no evidence these parking spaces help businesses; in fact, the pedestrian pound is what sensible councils are chasing.

Islington Greens have shown that pollution in Islington is at levels in excess of safe limits.

Islington figures on lung and heart disease ought to be a scandal and we must encourage more walking and cycling to tackle the obesity epidemic.

Caroline Allen, an Islington resident and Green Party candidate for next year’s European elections, said: “It is disappointing that, having started to hear positive things from the council regarding the will to tackle air pollution, its actions are completely at odds with this stated aim. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

“The council is not only misleading residents but is failing to protect their health and failing to make our streets more pleasant for people who live, work and shop here.”
