Islington Greens Demand Fairer Transport Fares

On the day transport fares go up throughout the country, activists from Islington Green Party have been talking to commuters and handing out #FairFares postcards at numerous stations across the borough, revealing our radical plans to flatten fares across the capital and make transport fairer for all Londoners. The stations were:

  • Caledonian Road
  • Highbury and Islington
  • Angel
  • Finsbury Park

The party’s three key measures, announced today by Green mayoral candidate Sian Berry, were:

  • the phased introduction of a flat fare structure, making zones a thing of the past;
  • a daily cap for part-time workers that matches the rates paid by monthly season ticket holders;
  • and a one-hour ticket across all modes which will close the gaps for people who pay twice when changing from bus or train to the Tube as well as ensuring that people changing buses pay only once for their journey.

“These measures will potentially make a huge difference to commuters in Islington,” said Samir Jeraj, Green candidate for North East London, including Islington, in May’s London Assembly elections.

“For anyone who works part time in Islington, our revision of the daily cap will mean that you’re no longer disadvantaged by the monthly Travelcard system if you work fewer than five days of the week.”

Cllr Caroline Russell, Green councillor for Highbury East ward and Green candidate for the London Assembly list said: “The one-hour bus ticket has been on the cards for a long time but our one-hour ticket across all modes of transport will mean that people who have to take a bus and the tube or a train and the tube are no longer paying more to get to work than those who use the tube alone. Many people in our borough use two more modes of transport to get to work, school or college and they should not be penalised by having to pay multiple fares.”
