Guest Post – Standing up For Islington

Teresa May is seeking a mandate for a destructive Brexit which no one wants.  In Islington, 75% voted to Remain in the EU, but the Tories are plunging us towards a catastrophic deal with Europe, ignoring the voices of people across the country who stood against UKIP’s fear-mongering campaign, and fought for inclusivity, economic stability and human rights.

In 2014 local elections, the Tories were third in Islington South, fourth in Islington North.  In both 2012 and 2016 London Assembly elections they were beaten into third place by the Greens.  They neither speak for Islington, nor attempt to engage with the voices of opposition in the country, but instead condemn their opponents, treating the millions of people alarmed by our current course as at best irrelevant, and at worst a thorn in the government’s side.

This election was called to silence once and for all the government’s Brexit critics – but it is also an opportunity to vote for a better future.

The Green Party stands up for the silenced 75%, for the unheard voices of more than 17,000 EU citizens in Islington, for the voters who feel betrayed by the destructive path the Tories are taking us down, and for the rights of all to be respected.  Only the Green Party has consistently demanded parliamentary scrutiny and a referendum on the final terms of any EU deal, against a government that has consistently tried to do everything behind closed doors.  A vote for the Greens is a vote for your right to have a say.
