This letter from our Green candidate for St Peters Ward, Caroline Allen, was published in the Islington Tribune, 5 August 2011

Islington’s first Green
Councillor, Katie Dawson successfully negotiated cross party support for a
budget amendment for a 20mph limit on all the borough’s residential streets.
Since the completion of the scheme last Autumn,  Islington Green Party has
campaigned to extend the benefits of 20mph speed limits to those who live and
work alongside the main roads in our borough where the negative impacts of
dense traffic on health and well-being are all too obvious.

The council ignored the
Greens objections to their ‘roamer parking scheme’, which encourages short car
journeys, demonstrating their
failure to understand
the significance of congestion on our streets; it’s not just about road safety
the situation is badly affecting our health.
 25 schools in
Islington are near roads carrying 10,000 or more vehicles a day, a level that
could be responsible for up to 30 per cent of all new cases of asthma in
children and Islington has very high levels of cardiac disease.

Katie showed that one
Green councillor can make a big difference, achieving an amazing amount such as
an apprenticeship scheme and free sport for young people, funding for new
allotments and improved criteria for developments. My aim is to continue this
work; a distinctive Green voice on the council will have a much more positive
impact than just one more Labour or LibDem Councillor.  I hope residents
in St Peter’s will consider this when casting their votes on 11th August.
