Islington Green Party supports the petition to extend cycle hire scheme to the whole of Islington. We would particularly like to see docking stations in residential areas and on estates to make the scheme useful and accessible to a broad range of residents. We recognise that the hire scheme is not perfect, but its extension will benefit a wider group of Islington residents who otherwise may not have the means or confidence to purchase their own bicycle.
Take up of cycling by more people will benefit Islington through reduced congestion and improved health of the borough’s residents, which makes the price of the extension worth paying. As well as extending the scheme we urge Islington Council to improve cycling safety and infrastructure through the enforcement of 20mph speed limit on all roads, re-design of busy junctions in collaboration with TfL and the provision of additional cycle routes.
