Getting European and Commonwealth Voters Voting

Islington Greens are encouraging EU and Commonwealth citizens to register to vote. London is home to many thousands of EU and Commonwealth citizens, who are eligible to vote in the local and European Elections in May but in many cases don’t know it. Islington alone boasts 15,000 EU citizens [1] but the turnout rate among them in past elections has been significantly lower than for the rest of the community.

The local Green Party, in conjunction with Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London, has launched a series of materials and promotional materials encouraging EU Citizens to vote in May, and will be delivering thousands of leaflets across the borough letting people know their rights. Caroline Allen, Islington Green Party campaigner and candidate for the European Elections, said:

“It’s crucial that EU and Commonwealth Citizens don’t miss their right to vote because of a simple lack of awareness. So much rhetoric in European Elections is taken up by UKIP scapegoating migrants, and it’s vital that Islington gets the chance to stand up for our positive and inclusive community.”

The deadline to register to vote in this election is the 6th May. Voters can download a registration form from the Islington Council Website or call 020 7527 3110 for assistance
