Islington Greens support public service workers on 10 July strike

Cllr Caroline Russell visited the picket line at Islington Town Hall this morning to express her support for striking workers before heading to the rally in Trafalgar Square where she met up with Charlie Kiss, Islington Green Party Campaigns Coordinator, who had been on the UNISON picket line in Camden where he works.

Charlie Kiss said; “I was very pleased with turnout at the building depot. The picket line was very well attended and we received lots of support from passers by including tenants and private sector workers in delivery vehicles. We have sent a strong message to the Government that we have had enough of continued low pay and that we need a well funded public service. The demonstration was primarily over pay but it was also against the ideologically drive and austerity agenda of this government. It was great to have Camden Green Councillor Sian Berry lend her support as well.”

Cllr Caroline Russell said; “The relentless squeeze on public sector wages has to end. These workers are delivering the services we all rely on and, in particular, many are supporting the most vulnerable residents. The financial crash was caused by the bankers but those paying the price are the people on modest salaries delivering essential services to our communities. It is of course a decision of last resort to go on strike and I support the striking workers wholeheartedly.”
