November 20th was the International Day of Trans Remembrance. This is a day when trans people and allies remember the many trans people who have been murdered simply for who they were. Sadly even in this country, trans people are killed. This horror is perpetuated by widespread ignorance and ongoing misunderstandings about people who don’t always fit neatly into narrow male or female categories.
We were pleased to see that Islington Council had the Transgender flag flying in recognition of this.
Brighton Council, a council run by the Green party, carried out a full consultation with the trans community and set up a trans scrutiny panel. Trans people can face significant difficulties finding a job, finding a house and staying safe; they often suffer discrimination and hate crime, especially when transitioning, and are sometimes unable even to use toilets without harassment. This is why gender neutral or unisex toilets are requested in public venues in addition to male and female facilities. Simple practical changes would make life much easier, such as shower curtains in sports facilities and making stating gender optional on so many forms. Educating people in council departments, schools, societies, clubs, about trans issues is crucial. We are therefore hopeful that Islington Council will also be making similar moves involving the trans community in discussing what can be done and making these improvements to the lives of trans people.
